![]() In autumn 2017 Honda released its fully redesigned 2018 MY Accord in the U.S., which comes with a 10-speed AT for the 2.0L direct injection turbo engine model. Then in March 2017 Toyota released its high-end sports coupe Lexus LC500, which was equipped with a 10-speed AT from Aisin AW (AWR10L65). The following spring saw Ford release its 2017 MY F-150 pickup truck, which also sported an in-house developed 10-speed AT. GM’s release of the 2017 MY Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 in autumn 2016 gave us the world’s first 10-speed automatic transmission (LT4 produced in-house). Low-cost models typically use 6-speed AT units, but in Europe ZF has been introducing more 8 and 9-speed types recently. ![]() Even as the shift towards DCT and CVT systems continues, there are improvements being made to step-type AT systems through the addition of extra stages to aid fuel economy. and Japan it is towards CVT due to the proliferation of small and medium FF models. In Europe the shift is mostly towards CVT systems, whereas in the U.S. And, if electric CVTs are included, such as hybrid models equipped with the Toyota THS-II, the Japan market represents a veritable CVT powerhouse.Īmong the varieties of AT systems, there is also a trend from step-type AT to CVT and DCT types. Except for Mazda, which will be described in more detail later, the shift to CVT is expected to accelerate in the Japanese market, mainly for small-medium-sized FF models. market, there was a brief period of transition from step-type ATs to CVTs, but most OEMs have returned to adopting step-type ATs. In the European market, the adoption of DCTs is increasing while coexisting with step-type ATs, and CVTs are uncommon except for Japanese OEM models. With regards to the automatic transmission market, in recent years the shift from step-type AT to CVT and DCT has been remarkable in recent years, but the tendency of the shift differs depending on the market. This large gap means that many models produced in Japan and the U.S. compose just 10% of the market, and around 10-20% in Japan. For D to E-Segment and above models using longitudinal transmissions the ratio of AT vehicles is rising, but for C-Segment and below vehicles using transverse transmissions MT models occupy 70-80% of the market, the highest rate in the world. ![]() Europe is the region in which MT (including DCT and AMT) vehicles still have the highest level of popularity. ![]() While the number of AT or CVT (including electric motor powered CVT units) equipped vehicles has been increasing as of late, there are still many regions where MT cars are popular and so both types have a roughly 50% share of the global market. AMT (Automated Manual Transmission)、Semi-AT (Semi-automatic transmission)įor the reminder of this report the term AT will be used to refer to automatic transmissions.DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission), which by some manufacturers is referred to by names such as DSG (direct-shift gearbox), PDK (Porsche), and i-DCD (Intelligent Dual Clutch Drive).Note, that MT-based dual clutch transmission units are not detailed in this report. The types of multistage AT systems detailed in this report include those that use torque converters and epicyclic gearing,Ĭontinuous variable transmission (CVT) units ( see Analysis Report: CVT), In this report both the AT units built internally and those supplied from the outside are listed based on the model they are equipped on. Thus the companies that can function as suppliers of transmission systems are limited to only the biggest players. Because of this important role in determining the characteristics of a car many OEMs produce transmission units internally in the same vein as engines and motors. It greatly contributes, along with the engine, to the driving capability, fuel economy, and ride feeling, and is often a differentiator between models. Transmission is a core component of any vehicle, controlling rotational speed, torque, and direction to best match the power output of the engine to the driving conditions.
